NU Issue 90

The new NU is available as of today. In this issue, for Hanukkah 2022, we have dedicated our dossier to the topic of Judaism and other religions. "With firm conviction we say: Stop the war! Let us put an end to all conflicts. War leads only to death and destruction, it is an adventure of no return in which we all lose. May the weapons be silent and a universal ceasefire be declared immediately. Before it is too late, may negotiations begin soon that will lead to just solutions for a stable and lasting peace!" This was the appeal made to the responsible politicians a few weeks ago at the international meeting of the world's religions in Rome. This meeting sends out the signal that religions are in contact with each other and stand together for peace.
These are encounters at eye level and in mutual respect. The dialogue serves to live, strengthen and promote togetherness, explains Chief Rabbi Jaron Engelmayer, who gave a speech as the Austrian Jewish representative in Rome. Recognizing the differences between religions, but also recognizing the complexity we often face. "Prayer is not seen, just like the most needed things in life such as air, friendship or love. And yet it is the greatest resource of change that every generation has had at its disposal for millennia," Engelmayer said in Rome, speaking of the fact, however, that human beings must also know how to help themselves. In keeping with this, he told the following joke: Moische desperately wanted to win the lottery, so he prayed daily with great devotion that God would please let him win for once. But the big win was not forthcoming. Then Moische, deeply disappointed, turned to God and said, "Why can't you let me win the lottery at least once?" Thereupon a heavenly voice sounded: "Moische, buy yourself a lottery ticket at last!" With this in mind: enjoy reading!
